What Happened to My PrintNC DIY CNC Router?

I was able to jog the X, Y, & Z axes on my PrintNC project, but it was getting frustrating trying to figure out all the open source software users on the Discord server were recommending.

It was taking too much time, so it’s time for it to go. I sold it for a huge loss.

But…is this the end? No. I’ve got a nice CNC router on order that should suit my needs.

DIY CNC Router for $2,000 – PrintNC Build Ep. 1

Commercially available CNC routers are relatively expensive ($6,000-15,000). So I decided to make a beefy DIY CNC router myself under $2,000.

PrintNC is a way of building a powerful and precise CNC router (like Workbee, X-Carve, ShopSabre, etc.) using rectangular tubular steel, 3D printed parts, and electronics readily available.

Let’s talk about sourcing steel for a PrintNC build. The cost for the PrintNC steel (and aluminum shown) was $327.62.

If you’re having trouble finding a place to source steel for your DIY CNC router machine, then do a search for “steel suppliers near me” or “metal distributors“, give them a call with your measurements and get some quotes.

A lot of the smaller manufacturing plants and metal suppliers don’t sell to “hobbyists” so just keep looking. The place where I bought my steel and aluminum for my PrintNC build was over 1.5 hours one way, but I got what I needed.
